The Pathfinder System

The Pathfinder Learning System is a computer-managed learning system that moves students through self-paced learning tasks. Each small step in a subject starts with a pre-test that identifies what specific skills or knowledge the student already knows, and which ones need to be learned. The student is then directed to specific pages in books at the student's reading level. After a post-test to demonstrate mastery, the computer system moves the student to the next small step of learning. When a student achieves 80% or better on a pre-test, the system moves the student immediately to the next topic's pre-test.

Do not be concerned if you do not "pass" a pre-test. This is how Pathfinder determines what assignments you will be required to do. Remember that for each outcome you are required to complete at least ONE item on an assignment sheet, then ask yourself, "Do I now understand the concept?" If the answer is "YES", tell the computer that you have completed the assignment. If you feel you need more work, do more assignments. It's your choice.

The pass mark for pre-tests and post-tests is 80%. If you do not pass a post-test, see an instructor for help before you continue. When requesting a test, the previous test must be handed in.

The following courses make use of the Pathfinder system:

  • English 11
  • English 12 Prep
  • Technical and Professional Communications 12
  • Accounting 11
  • Math Skills Development II
  • College Prep Math
  • Family Studies 12

Marking Standards for Paragraph and Essay Answers

Up to twenty (20) percent of the mark of each assignment may be deducted for incorrect capitalization, spelling, punctuation, as well as poor paragraph and essay structure. Always proofread your work before you hand it in. Please ask an instructor for a checklist for proofreading.

Work handed in for marking must be in the student's own words. Taking large chunks of writing from course materials and using it as one's own is called plagiarism. When using information from course materials, students need to rewrite the information in their own words as credit will not be given to work that is just copied word for word from course materials.

All Other Course Examinations

All exams are to be completed in one sitting. When you receive the exam the instructor will record the time on the test and assign your seating. The maximum time allowed for an exam is three hours. Please read the exam before you start so that you may budget for time accordingly. If you have any questions regarding the exam, please ask the instructor. When you have finished, or the time is up, return the test to the instructor who will note the time.

The pass mark of 50% is required on all exams. If you do not pass an exam, you will be required to redo some assignments or do some additional assignments before a retest is taken. If you do not pass a second test, you may be required to repeat the course. If, on the third writing of the test, you do not pass, you will be withdrawn from the course.
