It's been a long time since I went to school and I don't have a diploma. How will I know where to start?

All students begin by completing some assessment exercises. You can ask when the next assessment session will occur. Assessments are conducted at least twice per month. Once your work has been evaluated by a staff member, you will be advised of your skill levels. You will be given a starting point that will maximize your success. Sometimes that involves doing some review of basic skills, especially if it has been a long time since you were in a formal school setting.

Will I have to take many tests before I begin work on a course?

All students complete a basic assessment before being placed in courses. The assessment covers reading, written composition, and mathematics skills. The results indicate where best to start a given course. Most of the time, the next tests you take will be part of the individualized program involved in one of our Pathfinder courses. If you are interested in our mathematics courses, there are additional tests designed to ensure that you are starting at a point which matches your knowledge. These tests are designed so that you don't spend a great deal of time working on concepts you've already mastered, or that you aren't starting at a level that is too difficult.

I didn't complete high school and don't feel very confident about my reading and math skills. What can I do now?

The assessment exercises that all students begin with can provide us with information that will help us to place you at the best possible starting point. Since learning at the Continuing Education Centre is individualized, you will start at a level that is best for you and then work at your own pace. If your assessment indicates a need for help with basic literacy in either reading or math, we can develop a program to suit you. Basic skills courses are offered through our Literacy Program. There is no charge for courses at this level. As soon as you are ready to move on to more advanced courses, the staff will help you to make the transition.

I'm only a few courses short of a Grade 12 diploma. How can Continuing Education help me to get my diploma?

First of all, did you know that there have been changes made to the number of courses required for an Adult Graduation Diploma? Another bonus is that certain courses taken elsewhere (like first aid, music, or participation in scouting or national sports) may be recognized as course credits. You may be closer than you think! Upon registering at Continuing Education, a staff member will review the new requirements with you while also looking at your transcript. Based upon your goals, the staff member will make recommendations about the courses you need either to graduate or to move on to some other educational program that you have in mind.

I have a high school diploma but it's from a number of years ago. How can you help me get ready for an upcoming college course or assessment exam?

The staff at Continuing Education are aware of the skill levels needed for being successful with various North Island College assessment exams or other vocational assessments required in BC. Course work can be tailored to match those required skills so that you can efficiently move toward your educational goal.

How long does it take to complete a course?

If you are taking an entire course for credit, you have five months to complete each Grade 11 or 12 course. You can take more than one course at a time. How quickly you move through each course will depend upon the amount of time you have to devote to the course work and how quickly you grasp the concepts being covered. Discussions with staff members can help you set realistic goals once you have completed assessments and developed a study schedule that works for you.

I have a busy family and a job. How can I fit school into my life?

Since you are working on individualized course work, you can progress at your own pace and at whatever time you come to the Centre. In many cases you can take assignments home with you. Some Continuing Education students have taken work to camp with them, then attended the Centre during their days off in order to get assistance from instructors or to complete unit tests. Once you have become familiar with the work involved and have talked with staff and other students, you will become aware of many possibilities.
