Course Description 

Completion of Chemistry 11 fulfills the Science 11 requirement for a Regular Dogwood Diploma. You have five months to complete Chemistry 11.

Prerequisite

Math Skills Development 2 (MSD2) or successful completion of assessment.

MODULE 2     The Periodic Table, Periodic                             Trends, and Combining Elements

Section 2.1         The Periodic Table and Periodicity

Section 2.2          Electrons and Electron Arrangements

Section 2.3         Naming Compounds and Writing Formulas

            MODULE 3      The Mole, Chemical Reactions,                             Interpreting Equations, and Solutions

            Section 3.1          Atomic Mass and The Mole

            Section 3.2         Molar Mass of Compounds

            Section 3.3        Describing Physical and Chemical Changes

            Section 3.4         Interpreting Equations - Stoichiometry

            Section 3.5         Solution Chemistry

            MODULE 4     Organic Chemistry

            Section 4.1        An Introduction to Organic Chemistry

            Section 4.2       Complex Organic Compounds

 

Assignments

Students are required to complete a Hand-In Assignment after each Section and a test after each Module. Students must achieve at least 50% on all assignments and tests. If a mark is less than 50%, the student is asked to restudy and redo the assignment or complete a retest. 

The Final Grade for Chemistry 11 is calculated as follows: 

14 Section Assignments               40%

4 Module Tests (15% each)                60%


Textbooks and Course Materials

Nelson Chemistry, British Columbia Edition is the textbook required for Chemistry 11 and is available at the office with a $50.00 refundable deposit.
